World War II had a distinct impact on Middlebury generally, but specifically on the Football Team. The 1946 team was chosen from only 125 men, and most of them were Navy men who could only practice after supper and on Saturday. Only four games were played that season, we won one, one was a tie, and we lost two.
The football program made a big comeback in 1947. Walter "Duke" Nelson, Middlebury class of 1932, came back to his alma mater in 1946 as coach of football. From the record enrollment of over six hundred men, he built up a team which, though young and inexperienced, ended the season as the football champions of the State of Vermont.
In this clip, the football field was along Porter Field Rd. where the running track is today.
